Alissa Quart is the author of two non-fiction books, Branded: The Buying and Selling of Teenagers (Basic Books) and Hothouse Kids: The Dilemma of the Gifted Child (Penguin Press). Her third book, Republic of Outsiders, about the effect of subcultures on the mainstream, is out August 2013. Her books have been translated into eight languages. She writes for The New York Times and many other publications, from O Magazine to The Nation. In addition, Ms. Quart teaches at Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism and was a 2010 Nieman Fellow at Harvard.
Her specialties are the media, social justice and identity rights movements, cultural communities and social networks, commercialism, and youth culture. In addition to her books, she has written altogether hundreds of articles on these topics for magazines and newspapers. Both “The Today Show” and “20/20” have devoted segments to her books, along with dozens of other television and radio shows. She has been profiled by The New York Times, The LA Times and many other publications and her books have been widely reviewed by those and many other publications.
