Jo-Ann Finkelstein, PhD, is a clinical psychologist in private practice and the author of Sexism & Sensibility: Raising Empowered, Resilient Girls in the Modern World (Penguin Random House). She speaks regularly on topics related to women’s issues, gender, and parenting. She earned a master’s in human development and psychology from the Harvard Graduate School of Education, and a doctorate in clinical psychology from the Northwestern University Feinberg School of Medicine. She completed her fellowship in women’s health at Northwestern Memorial Hospital and was a program evaluation consultant for health and sexuality education curricula for the Cambridge and Chicago public school systems. Dr. Finkelstein has taught at Northwestern University, the Illinois School of Professional Psychology, and Loyola University Chicago.
Before becoming a psychologist, Dr. Finkelstein worked extensively with adolescents both in clinical and non-clinical settings, addressing high-risk behaviors such as teen pregnancy and substance abuse, and designing programs for youth at risk of dropping out of school. In addition, she spent three years working in a woman’s shelter for abused women.
Dr. Finkelstein’s insights have been highlighted in publications such as, The New York Times, The Atlantic, The Guardian, Harvard Business Review, Oprah Daily, and CNN. Her writing has appeared in The Washington Post, Psychology Today, Ms. Magazine, and elsewhere and on her Substack, The Feminist Parent. Dr. Finkelstein serves on the Advisory Board for Stop Sexual Assault in Schools, advocating for safe and equitable educational environments. She has also served on the board of the Chicago Chapter of the National Organization for Women, volunteered for Planned Parenthood PAC, and was an organizer for the Chicago Women’s March. She lives in Chicago with her family and two dogs.
